Career news and successful stories: Rafa Vidaurreta
Written on February 8, 2012 by blended.team in Athletes, Careers
It will be fair to say that 2012 started a bit chaotic. Even more if we consider the sluggish labor market Spain is living these days. I ended up the year working for Club de Baloncesto Estudiantes in the Sales & Marketing department and soon after the new year started I was working for the Marketing & Promotions department at Spanish Basketball Federation or mostly known as FEB. My first official day was on the 10th of January. I must have been a very good boy last year since the “Reyes Magos” brought me this amazing opportunity.
I played professional basketball for 9 years and it was an amazing experience. A year after I finished playing, and although I had a Communications Degree from Wake Forest, I realized that I needed to reinforce my academic background to give some a base to all the knowledge I gained throughout my Basketball career. Last year I joined IE and I enrolled in the Master in Sports Management program.
Needless to say it has been very hard for me to pick up another set of books and start studying again after 10 years of just bouncing a basketball since my college graduation. One year working for Club Estudiantes provided me with some work experience. I don´t doubt that being a part of an IE program, along the work experience and my past as a pro-athlete, helped people at FEB see potential in me.
As I prepare for a meeting now I am very excited to learn how one of the world´s most successful basketball Federations works. It is a big change and the road seems infinite now. I realize that right now I´m “the last monkey” (último mono) but we are now managing many short/mid and long-term projects that get me very excited and out of bed without hitting the snooze button. There is plenty of room to grow.
I am aware that I´m lucky to have this opportunity. I am also aware that others deserve a break and don´t get it, but as long as you get up every morning ready to start some sh*# and you are not scared to talk to people you still have a chance. Just as a very smart man once told me: “Every morning, and as soon as that alarm-clock goes off… put your feet on the floor and be excited for another opportunity to improve”.
Best wishes to all
Rafa Vidaurreta*
*Rafa Vidaurreta is a student of the Master in Sports Management from the current intake and he will be graduating in a couple of weeks.

Open Videoconference TODAY! -The Spanish Soccer League
Written on January 30, 2012 by blended.team in Careers, MSM News, Sport Marketing
The Spanish Soccer League: Are Real Madrid and FC Barcelona getting better while the rest get worse?
By Prof. Eduardo Fernández-Cantelli
Date and Time: Monday 30th, January - 6 pm (Madrid time)
REGISTER HERE !
The Spanish Soccer League (La Liga) has been able to draw the world’s most talented players and is arguably the most competitive national league globally. Because of the evolution of the sport and the general soccer competitiveness, constantly changing revenue streams and evolving structures and regulations, La Liga and its clubs here have been forced to continually adapt their business models and management practices to maintain their leadership positions. However while two Spanish clubs in particular, Real Madrid CF and FC Barcelona, have been able to maintain their supremacy both on the field and financially, many other Spanish clubs are finding it very difficult to make their franchises financially viable. Solutions need to be explored in order for the Spanish league, also known as the Liga, to survive over the long term.
ABOUT THE SPEAKER:
Prof Fernández-Cantelli believes that his work on sports marketing has broader implications for the corporate world. “I bring insights into sports marketing, sponsorships and promotions,” he says. “But these areas are certainly applicable to other areas of business.”
What really interests Prof Fernández-Cantelli from a marketing standpoint is the fact that, while in the US sport is conceived as entertainment, emotional attachment is what drives sports consumers in Europe. “That’s interesting in the way you segment the sport market and develop a marketing strategy, because it’s not based on income levels but on the commitment to the team,” he says. “This is an underdeveloped area but it is evolving, and in the next few years marketing efforts are going to be increasingly focused on understanding how consumers relate to sports.”
